About Alister McCormick

I am a Sport and Exercise Psychologist based in Devon, England. I am chartered member of the British Psychological Society, and I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. I lecture in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of St Mark and St John, Plymouth. I recently finished my PhD in sport psychology. I have expertise in how psychology can be used to improve the performances of athletes, particularly in endurance sports such as middle- and long-distance running, cycling, swimming, and triathlon events.

I consult with athletes, coaches, and teams from a range of sports. Generally speaking, my consultation activities fall under one of two broad areas:

  1. I teach athletes psychological skills that can help to improve their performance. It is a myth that something needs to be wrong for an athlete to benefit from working with a sport psychologist. Athletes in most competitions are similar in ability, and it is often psychological factors (such as the ability to handle pressure or to ignore distractions) that determine who achieves their goals in competition.
  2. I help athletes to address problems such as high anxiety, low self-confidence, or fear of re-injury that athletes, their coaches, or their families feel are preventing them from enjoying their sport or performing close to their potential.
If you are interested in my professional services or have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email.
